Unwritten Life Stories, Recorded by the Hands of Silence

An outdoor street market is being taken down. Long rows of metal poles hold red and white stripped metal sheets overhead, creating a tunnel hallways. Just off center, a person wearing dark pants and a brown jacket is bent over, picking up trash. On the ground, there are leaves, trash, crushed fruit, cardboard boxes, and plastic wrap scattered across the pavement. In the background, a few other people walk through the empty stalls, some carrying bags. Tree with autumn leaves and a city street frame end of the day feeling after the market has closed.

Yearly Emerging Practices (YEP) - the newest evolution of Emerging Curators Institute (ECI) - will present the curatorial vision of 2024-25 Fellow Lucino at Fresh Eye Gallery, as part of YEP’s Re-Frame Series.

Unwritten Life Stories, Recorded by the Hands of Silence is a multimedia exhibition born from a deep commitment to amplify stories too often absent from mainstream cultural spaces. Artists Anthony, Irving and Grecia have collaborated with Minnesota based local Latine community members to create expressive art works that seek to increase visibility, spark dialogue and challenge dominant narratives; engaging sound, image, and poetry.

Information on the Fellowship Experience

As part of the 2024-25 cohort of Emerging Curators Institute Fellows, Lucino participated in a dynamic 10 month learning cycle that involved monthly cohort meetings exploring curatorial practice, intersectionality and accessibility, site visits to local museums & galleries, and engaging in dialogues with national curators; leading to dedicated time to manifesting the exhibition and engaging in various meetings, studio visits and administrative work.

Towards the end of the fellowship period, each Fellow was paired with a mentor.  Lucino was supported by award-winning artist and photographer Xavier Tavera, with overall guidance throughout the learning cycle and manifesting of the fellowship exhibitions by Barak adé Soleil, Director of ECI and Founder of Yearly Emerging Practices.

About the 2024-25 Emerging Curators Institute Fellow

Lucino (He/Him/EL) is an artist shaping his unique fusion of illustrations, photography, and poetry. Exploring themes of grief, joy, and trauma, his art serves as a medium for introspection and empathy. Sosa helps to open spaces for systematically excluded communities through his work. Advocacy intertwines with his art, fostering activism and opening dialogues for underrepresented groups. He also guides others in expressing their emotions, using art as a tool for healing and storytelling. Committed to social justice, Sosa’s political art sheds light on the struggles of systematically excluded communities, igniting discussions and support for those sidelined by systemic injustices. #HastaLaLucha.

About the Participating Artists

Anthony blends sound, performance, and visual media to explore identity, labor, displacement, and belonging. Using layered field recordings, video projections, and audience participation, he transforms spectators into collaborators in a collective soundscape.

Irving As a graphic designer, illustrator, and concert photographer, Vázquez uses portraits, zines, and concert-style visuals to capture the vibrancy of the Latinx music scene. His work bridges music culture with personal narratives, creating a space of both celebration and reflection.

Grecia’s poetry explores migration, identity, and belonging. Her work blends personal narrative with cultural memory, reflecting on displacement, resilience, and the spaces between cultures.

About Yearly Emerging Practices

Emerging Curators Institute (ECI) is a groundbreaking initiative designed to support the practices of emerging curators from diverse backgrounds through in-depth research, professional development, and presentation. In 2025, ECI became a project of Yearly Emerging Practices, seeking to support the expansiveness of creativity across curatorial and artistic practices locally and globally.

Unwritten Life Stories, Recorded by the Hands of Silence is part of Yearly Emerging Practice’s ReFrame Series, made possible in part by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and Minnesota State Arts Board thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
